Mad Men: A Journey Through the Ups and Downs of the Troubled 1960's
Mad Men is an American dramedy television series that follows the lives of the employees of the fictitious advertising agency Sterling Cooper & Partners, set in the late 1960s and early 1970s in New York City. It first aired on AMC on July 19, 2007, and ran until May 17, 2015, in total concluding with 92 episodes across seven seasons. Developed by writer and executive producer Matthew Weiner, Mad Men is arguably one of the greatest television dramas ever to air and is widely acclaimed for its accurate storytelling and impeccable direction. Mad Men has won several Emmy Awards and was voted by Time Magazine as one of the best television shows of the last century.
A Reflection of the Dynamic 1960s Atmosphere
This series explores plenty of themes including societal standpoints and values surrounding gender, race and sexuality; as well as the Maturity Gap. Set in the 1960s and 70s, an era brimming with revolution and free spirit, Mad Men draws its viewers into a different era of culture. Through this series, it becomes increasingly fascinating to observe how trends, fashion and values changed or stayed the same. It also allows audiences to gain insight on the - what must have been - thrilling feeling of daring to be different than the rest; moreover, it prompts viewers to reflect on the ever-changing nature of creativity and ambition in order to stand out in a competitive market.
Circumnavigation of the Complexities of the Human Psyche
At its core, Mad Men is a story about the constant struggle between the characters and themselves. The series explores the mind of Don Draper, the lead character, a complex former-war-veteran-turned-businessman, and his coworkers as they journey through life, love, family, work and secrets. As various emotional conflicts arise and their consciousness continues to evolve, viewers are taken on a rollercoaster as the characters adjust to their sometimes difficult and demanding lives. Ultimately, Mad Men illustrates the almost relentless intermingling between caring and destroying, loving and lying, that comes with being human.
Unforgettable Moments in Time
The journey of Mad Men through the 21st century will continue to serve as a remarkable cultural timekeeper. The soundtrack, wacky costumes and impressive cinematography present a picture perfect illustration of the 60’s and 70's atmosphere. Moreover, many of the topics that are depicted in Mad Men continue to play a role in today’s society, making the series even more captivating to viewers of this generation who can still relate to the content that has been so meticulously portrayed in this show.
