Should You Try Partial Or Full Highlights? We Asked Experts To Explain The Difference

When it comes to lightening your hair with highlights, there are a few different options to choose from. Known as "partial highlights" or "full highlights", understanding the difference is important for deciding which route is best for your hair goals.

I spoke with hairstylists Josh and Hantal to get their expert opinions on partial versus full highlights. Both techniques involve lightening strands of hair, but they deliver noticeably different looks.

What are Highlights?

Highlights are a coloring technique used to brighten up hair in sections, without having to fully dye the whole head. Foils are used to separate strands and apply bleach to just certain pieces. This both lights up the hair and adds texture and dimension.

What are Partial Highlights?

Partial highlights, as the name suggests, only involve lightening part of the hair. It's a more subtle approach. Hantal explained partial highlights are great for enhancing your natural color or subtly framing your face. Usually 1/2 to 2/3 of the hair is left untouched.

Full Highlights

Full highlights, on the other hand, lighten every single section of hair. Josh noted this creates a bolder, more dramatic color change. Your entire head will be transformed versus just pieces being brightened up.

How to Choose?

When choosing, consider your goals. Partial highlights provide a soft enhancement and won't require much maintenance. Full highlights give an all-over transformation but more obvious regrowth. Pictures can help communicate what look you want to your stylist too.

Stunning Ideas for Partial Highlights

No matter which you select, both partial and full highlights when done right add lushness and dimension to hair. Consult with your stylist to find the best highlighting technique suited to your individual hair goals and features. With the experts' input, you'll be better equipped to choose partial versus full for your desired look.
