Tudors: Season 1 trailer
The History of the Tudors TV Show
The Tudors is a critically acclaimed and award-winning television drama series first broadcast on Showtime on April 1, 2007. Set during the reign of King Henry VIII, the series examines the politics and personal life of the royal house of Tudor which ruled England from 1485 to 1603. Developed by executive producer Michael Hirst, the show stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Henry Cavill, Sam Neill, and Natalie Dormer among others in its main cast. The series ran for four seasons, concluding on June 20, 2010.
The Tudors vividly detailed court life of the period with real historical figures merging into the scripted fictional pantheon of the House of Tudor. This practice Biblically led to less scaffolding of the story and the series managed to recreate Queen Anne Boleyn's rise and fall at the court of Henry VIII. The series is also known for its numerous scenes featuring wind-swept love poets that convey an essential aspect of the era.
Critical Acclaim
The Tudors earned the highest drama debut in Showtime's history at the time buff being widely acclaimed by critics. The series won and was nominated for multiple awards, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Main Title Design, four Golden Globe Awards, and twelve Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Legacy of The Tudors
The series has become so popular that it paved the way for subsequent series set in the Middle Ages. The success of the Tudors led to the greenlighting of The White Queen in 2013, an adaptation of Philippa Gregory's The Cousins War historical novel series, as well as the critical and popular hits The Crown (2016–present) and Game of Thrones (2011–2019).
