Located in the easternmost part of the state of Alaska, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is part of the largest national park in the U.S. Covering 13 million acres of land, the national park is home to snow-capped mountains, glaciers, wild rivers, densely forested valleys, and jagged cliffs. The unparalleled majesty of this immense landscape is unmatched in the U.S.
The Wrangell-St. Elias National Park area was established as a national park in 1980, and it is jointly managed by the National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management. In 1979 the Kluane National Park Reserve was established in Yukon, Canada, with part of it included in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Together they form an international UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The park protects an immense variety of unique ecosystems and wildlife, including grizzly bears, wolves, moose, Dall sheep, mountain goats, and bald eagles. The park also includes numerous glacial valleys and grasslands, rugged coastal terraces, lowlands, and a variety of plants, shrubs, and animals.
Outdoor Recreation in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
Adventure seekers can explore the area by horseback riding, rafting, backpacking, and mountaineering. Within the park, there are numerous hiking trails and four-wheel drive roads which allow visitors to experience the wilderness from a variety of viewpoints. Visitors can stay in the backcountry campsites, in the motel at the McCarthy Visitor Center, or in one of the three lodges located in the park.
The Paradise and Donoho Glaciers are two of the most popular destinations. The McCarty Glacier is another favorite destination for those who wish to experience a spectacular landscape of snow-covered mountains, giant blue glaciers, and breathtaking views.
Places to Visit near Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
The nearby towns of McCarthy/Kennicott, Chitina, and Copper Center have a variety of shops and restaurants. The Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center is a great place to learn more about the park and the wildlife that lives there. Visitors can also take a tour of the Kennecott Mines, a National Historic Landmark which tells the history of copper mining in the area.
