1920s Flapper Hairstyle Tutorial
The Flapper Hairdo: Beauty Icon of the Roaring Twenties
The Flapper hair style of the 1920s remains one of the most iconic art deco looks of the century. With its requisite short bob cut, often with shingled hair and finger waves, and heavily coiffed updos, the flapper hairdo remains a symbol of the vibrant and fashionable women of the Roaring Twenties.
This short haircut was often created with the help of a curling iron, and sometimes enhanced with the application of mousse. It was made to be bouncy and exude energy. Many Flapper hairstyles were incredibly structured with a combination of pin curls, a finger wave or undulating set, along with a deep part and a plethora of bobby pins.
Longer Flapper hair was waved on the sides and shaped around the face, with shorter sections in the back or pinned away. Vintage hair accessories often completed the look, such as pillbox hats, feathers, net veils, and elaborate bejeweled headbands.
Get the Look
If you want to replicate the fun and flapper look of the 1920s today for a party or special event, start with voluminous and shiny hair. To create that classic vintage look, set your locks with pin curls and finish with oil or wax and a pomade. For those with long and thick hair, the style can be pinned up into waves and (optional) braided buns.
Finally, add a sparkly headband, feather, or another accessory to this timeless hairdo.
